What is Name Zone ?
Name Zone is a site that offers secondary DNS services to small
domain and web site owners. We do offer daomain registration and web
hosting but our primary focuse is secondary DNS.
-
Why do I need a secondary DNS?
Well, you don't have to have secondary but it really is a good idea.
A secondary functions as a backup. Chances are your primary, if setup
correctly, will not go down but if it should people will not be able
to get to your webserv and, more importly, your email will not get
deliverd. Modern mail servers, before they deliver email, do a forward
and reverse lookup on your mail server. If either part of that lookup
fails the mail server will reject the email. A fully functioning
secondary DNS will prevent that.
-
What name server should I use?
We recommend Bind 9 or greater. Bind, which ships with
FreeBSD and most
Linux distros,
is the defacto name server on the Internet. We use Bind 9 so our
secondary update mechnism is based on bind 9.
